Accident Summary:

 ON 28 SEPTEMBER 1970 WO1 HALL AND WO1 BILES TOOK OFF ON A RESUPPLY MISSION IN SUPPORT OF THE CAPITOL ROK INFANTRY DIVISION. IT WAS A SINGLE SHIP MISSION. ENROUTE TO THE MISSION THE CREW PERFORMED THEIR DAILY DER CHECKF N1 - 93.5%, EGT - 530 DEGREES AND OAT 24C. PRIOR TO THE MISSION THE AIRCRAFT WAS REFUELED AT QUI NHON, RVN. FUEL COTAMINATION CHECKS WERE PERFORMED WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS. THEY BEGAN THEIR MISSION OF RESUPPLY TO PINNACLE POSITIONS AROUND AN SON, RVN, TO INCLUDE ONE APPROACH, PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, TO THE LZ (MATTERHORN). ON THE SECOND APPROACH TO LZ MATTERHORN WO1 BILES PERFORMED HIS PRE-LANDING CHECK WITH ALL INSTRUMENTS GREEN. AT APPROXIMATELY 50' AGL AND 100' FROM THE POINT OF INTENDED TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE RPM BEGAN TO BLEED RAPIDLY CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO BEGIN SPINNING TO THE RIGHT. WO1 WALL TOOK THE CONTROLS AND ATTEMPTED A GO-AROUND. UNABLE TO PERFORM A GO-AROUND, HE ATTEMPTED TO LAND IN THE LZ. HIS LANDING AREA WAS RESTRICTED BY TROOPS AND SUPPLIES IN THE LZ. THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED INTO THE PERIMETER WIRE ENTANGLING THE RIGHT SKID. THE AIRCRAFT LUNGED FORWARD AND TO THE LEFT STRIKING THE GROUND IN A NOSE LOW ATTITUDE. A SHORT TERM INTERNAL FIRE OCCURRED WHICH EXTINGUISHED ITSELF.\\
