Man in the doorway - Photo provided by David Jones
This photo captures the man in the doorway, a Vietnam era door gunner, one of the most exposed, lethal, and indispensable combat roles of the war. As helicopters, especially the UH-1 Huey, became the backbone of airmobile operations, crews relied on the door gunner to defend the aircraft at point-blank range.
